Every year, my husband and I try to attend Art in the Park, a local art show. I enjoy looking at the watercolor art and wondering if I will ever paint that well. One particular artist, Maggie McCarthy, I particularly enjoyed talking to and admiring her art. This year when we stopped at her booth, she gave me a flyer for a workshop she was teaching on landscape painting. I thought to myself "I could never take time off and afford this..." but I carried around the flier for a week or two. I decided that I was going to make it happen this year no matter what for my own mental well being! I do not regret it!
Maggie McCarthy is a watercolor artist near St. Louis, Missouri. Her landscapes are stunning with a sense of mystery but also warmth. She has a background in teaching, and her love of teaching made this workshop a blast. She was very encouraging, and I learned a ton. The biggest thing I learned was letting go of capturing a source photo perfect. It's ok to change the colors and compostion to suit my preferences :) This in itself is liberating! I also learned how to do rough drafts with a Tombow marker (which of course Art Outfitters sells https://www.facebook.com/ARTOutfitters/), and use a flat brush. It was certainly a challenge to put down my favorite size 6 round brush and use bigger brushes! If you have a love of watercolor, but only dabble in it like me...lessons from Maggie are highly recommend! Her website is https://www.maggiemccarthy.com/.
